The Unification Foundation is a group of impassioned individuals from diverse industries coming together to solve a problem at the core of our increasingly digital society.

The current methods for managing data contradict our deeply held values of transparency, privacy, and efficiency.

We see clearly that data has the power to positively change lives, but also recognize that with today’s systems of data exchange, many of these opportunities are being squandered.

The current data marketplace is opaque and fragmented, with high barriers to entry that prohibit innovation and stunt ground-breaking research. Researchers and advertisers have no efficient way to access much of the data that is being produced. Because there is no open marketplace to connect researchers, developers, and consumers, valuable data is sitting unused, preventing apps from adding greater functionality and researchers from making scientific breakthroughs.

Furthermore, the very people generating value in the system — the end users — are being cut out of the exchange entirely. To use today’s apps and websites, users have to consent to a data management system that is designed to benefit businesses solely and is written in a long-winded and confusing Terms of Service agreement.

The result is that we have no way of monitoring who has access to our data and are not compensated in any way for the data we create. Furthermore, our data is stored on centralized databases, at risk of hacking and tampering. We have lost control of our own data.

At the Unification Foundation, we believe that it’s time to demand more transparency, privacy, and efficiency across all levels of data exchange.

Our solution is to empower individuals and help forward-thinking companies lead the charge into a transparent, open, user-controlled data ecosystem and marketplace.

Everybody wins with Unification.

Our team operates according to the following principles:

Connected but Decentralized

Human beings are wired for connection. However, we also require privacy, protection, and individuality. We believe that these forces can work in tandem rather than opposition. Returning control of user data to the individual empowers people to safely connect with the world around them, while remaining secure and private through decentralization.

Your Data is Your Currency

In the modern internet era, user-created data is becoming increasingly important. Without it, much of the modern world would be unable to function in the ways we’ve grown accustomed to. However, the value of the data is being denied to the people who are generating it. We believe in a world where users themselves can exercise control over the rights, permissions, and monetization of their data.

Code is Law

As a society, the ways we make laws and create consensus have shifted dramatically over time. At one point, brute force won the day, later to be replaced by written laws that codified human interactions. Each of these systems was vulnerable in that each aspect was left up to interpretation by individuals. In our new era, we have been empowered by the beauty of code to self-enforce without human intervention. In this system, Code has now become Law, which brings with it full transparency and immutability not limited by trust or interpretation.

Unified Data Sharing

At the present moment, data is held primarily in isolated vertical silos, out of reach from other apps, researchers, advertisers, and users themselves. Data purchasers don’t have a direct route to find and access the data they seek, and users have no way to actively opt into sharing their data with interested parties. An open and free marketplace for standardized data creates better access for data purchasers while allowing users to share and monetize the data they generate.
